The congregation of St. Marks has been described as "small and
friendly" and "a family church", as "looking outwards" and "a
place where anything can happen"! We have a strong Eucharistic
tradition: vestments are worn, and care is taken with the
liturgy. However, we don't take ourselves too
seriously.
The church of St. Marks in the Cherry Orchard was built at the
turn of the last century to serve the growing population (mainly
through the expansion of the railways) of the Cherry Orchard, a
(then) largely rural suburb to the south of the city of
Worcester. In the 1950s the Cherry Orchard
became a parish, and in 1981 it became part of the Worcester
South East team of churches.
The church is red brick, built over the church hall, which is
used nearly continuously throughout the
week for community and church activities. The church building
itself is simple and unpretentious – our only valuables are the
congregation! We are trying to keep the church open during the
day. Like most churches have are ‘financially challenged’ but we
are rising to the challenge. We have a very good
relationship with the Brownies and Guides, the Sea cadets, the Pre-school group. the Mums and Toddlers group and other
organizations that use the church hall. In
addition, there are many church-initiated groups, such as the
friendship club, a weekly prayer group, Cherry Orchard
group and many others.
